I had the privilege of writing the hook for Jabo’s song “Beautiful Mess” featuring Candace Dixon, and I got to feature some of my spoken word at the end of the track. Check it out! I hope you enjoy.

“Beautiful Mess” – Jabo feat. Candace Dixon & Quina Aragon: https://jabobeatbox.bandcamp.com/track/beautiful-mess-ft-candace-dixon-savannah-lauren-quina-aragon

Hook:

(1) I used to be beautiful, beautiful (x3)
I used to be, used to be
(2) Could I be beautiful, beautiful (x3)
Could I be? Could I be?
(3) A mess could be beautiful, beautiful (x3)
A mess could be, a mess could be

Quina’s verse:

Ah! What of this mess?

Strange sap melting back

into stinging cracks

torn upon my trunk upholding

choking, frozen easily broken branch

lightning strikes and hollow blows from feigned friends

only expose my own deep-rooted deficiencies within,

just fertile soil for further sin.

But what of this Gardener God-man?

He knows trees, He foreknew me

And now I know him

He’s at work, uprooting,

yea, consuming

that bitterness rooted beneath my callus bark ridge.

And I recall, given gall

He gave me figs.

My risen Judge, His

tree-nailed wrists

bearing marks of His passion—

those scars? My sin against Him

are ornaments of grace,

worn and adored in Heaven.

His wounds, His weapons

defeating death’s herbicide-like sting.

So I, this mess, will sing

of His thorn-crowned compassion,

cursed for the Fall on a tree

to resurrect and

awaken us Spring:

beautifully fruitful, His vineyard green.
