Mom Before

A part of growing up
is realizing that
Mom had a life before me,
that she had experiences,
accomplishments, tragedies
before me,
and I don’t know the half
of it.
Why don’t I ask her
more questions
about her
while I still can
instead of assuming
I know her fully,
replaying only the scenes
I’m in?
